During August the number of private planes flying into Malaga Airport shot up. Private jets use the small separate terminal called “Aviacion General” which is dedicated to this sector of the market.
On average 20 to 25 flights a day were recorded and on the busiest days, just before and after weekends, as many as 50 private planes used the terminal every day. The month total of 800 private flights is a 40 percent increase on last August.
There are apparently three main reasons for this massive growth in flight numbers.
Most importantly this years month of Ramadan (a period of fasting by Muslims) ended on July 28th, just in time for the height of summer.
Secondly, the Costa del Sol continues to attract more and more high end Russian visitors.
And finally Marbella’s Starlite Festival has attracted a number of world class stars and a wealthy audience to the area, including the richest man in the world, Mexican Carlos Slim.
There are also a number of occasional, mostly rich European company directors who fly in for a few days to play golf.
Juan Manuel Martin, head of Areodynamics Malaga and a major figure in Malaga’s private plane sector, said. “This month has been incredible with many more flights. It’s a fantastic summer and we are verry happy!”
