THE donkey-taxis in Mijas have all been given a clean bill of health.
Twice a year all the animals undergo tests with their hooves, teeth and backs examined by vets from ‘El refugio del burrito’ donkey refuge.
The donkeys are mainly used to give tourists rides around the famous mountainside white village, with most of the animals kept in good shape by their owners, with only a few below average.
Also checked are the donkeys´ microchips that indicate any possible health concerns including the skin. All animals also have new shoes fitted, and once they have passed all the tests they are marked.
The most common problem faced with the donkeys is fractures to front teeth which occur when they fight and hit their heads together.
The town hall has been asked by the donkey owners to overturn an earlier decision to ban the use of the traditional route used through to village.
This move was made in an attempt to avoid the mess often left by donkeys.
