August will take off at “full throttle” with hotel occupation up on last year.
Things are looking good for the tourism industry; the predicted 2.5 per cent increase in bookings this year appears to have been achieved although figures have not been published yet.
“The saviour of the industry in the past, the Spanish tourist, is showing signs of cooling off, but that is being compensated by the influx of the British, Arabs Dutch & Scandinavians,” says the president of AEHCOS (Empresarios Hotelaros de la Costa del Sol), Jose Carlos Escribano.
Due to the economic situation the Spanis only book for two or three days and at the very last minute, “They make the booking at the same time as they are putting petrol in the car to get here”jokes Miguel Sanchez, president of the Andalusian Businessman Confederation.
“In comparison foreigners book longer holidays and seem happier to spend their money” he explains.
